This saying comes from my high school principal. I’m actually not sure if he made it up or if I should be crediting someone else for its origin. But, I remember sitting in class during the first period. My principal would come on the loudspeaker and give the daily announcements.
He ended the broadcast with “You have the power to make it a great day or not. The choice is yours.” As high school students, we would just roll our eyes and think yeah okkkk. But the saying has stuck with me after all these years. The older and more mature I have become, has made me realize the accuracy of this saying.
I do have the power to make it a great day. I have the power to overcome burnout. I have the power to be who I want to be. I have the power to live out my true purpose.
Some of us have come from extremely difficult situations. Some of us have had unfathomable experiences happen. Some of us are stuck in a deep hole and feel completely hopeless. While it is true we cannot control some of the things that have happened in life, we get to choose how we respond. We get to decide how we want to feel. How we want to act. How we live our life.
It is so easy to be in victim mode. To think we are powerless in a situation. This is how I felt at the low point of my burnout. I didn’t know what to do because I thought I couldn’t control my current situation. I didn’t think there was any possibility of even being happy and enjoying my work in healthcare.
I had to decide to take control of my life.
Not every day is perfect, but you need to stick up for yourself. You need to make whatever changes are necessary. You have the strength to change a situation. You have the power to make it a great day. The choice is yours.
