Your burnout is costing you more than you think.
Nurse practitioner burnout can be described by prolonged mental, physical, emotional exhaustion. Burnout is caused by repeated overwhelm, stress, limiting beliefs, work-life imbalance.
APRNs might think the burnout will get better………
If only you could quit your job. If only there is a new administrator. If only you can survive the increased workload of the pandemic.
But healthcare burnout is not that simple. The stress you may be feeling right now is causing long term consequences.
As nurse practitioners, we all know the physical implications caused by burnout. Increased cardiovascular risk, obesity, poor healing, progression of chronic disease, etc.
There are also mental and emotional factors caused by burnout. Increased anxiety, depression, and even suicide.
Burnout is also causing issues at work. When we are not focused mentally, there is risk for errors. Some errors can cause fatal patient outcomes. We don’t have the energy or motivation to properly educate our patients. The burnout creates issues with patient safety.
The burnout affects our productivity at work. Our minds are exhausted, slowing down our clinic days. Creating increased stress and strain on our co-workers. We then have to finish charts at home, taking time away from our families.
We have increased stress and decreased patience. Unfortunately, we often take our issues out on our friends, our spouses, our children. We don’t have the time or energy our families deserve.
Your burnout is creating multiple negative outcomes. It is not only affecting your life, but those around you. Commit to conquering your burnout, because your life is on the line.
