I used to be burned-out.
I became burned out while working as a registered nurse on a busy acute care floor. I didn’t even know I was burned out until I read an article on compassion fatigue in healthcare providers and checked every single box.
My signs and symptoms of healthcare burnout included:
- Mental, physical, emotional exhaustion
- I dreaded going to work and lacked empathy and compassion for my patients
- I was not showing up for my husband, son, friends, or coworkers
- I started to feel detached from my work as a nurse, and worse, myself
- I no longer cared about working as a nurse
- I contemplated leaving healthcare
I was completely burned-out.
Once I finally realized I was struggling with burnout, I made the conscious effort to overcome the burnout.
- I learned to take control of my life
- I implemented healthy boundaries
- I started to actually do the self-care
- I stopped being a people pleaser
- I created a better work-life balance
- I was able to overcome the burnout!
I am now a family nurse practitioner working in a critical access hospital and thus far have been able to prevent burning out again!
When the COVID-19 pandemic started, I realized just how many nurse practitioners were struggling with burnout. There is a push from administration to see more patients, sicker patients. Many healthcare facilities are struggling with staffing shortages, requiring APRNs to take on more tasks. Many nurse practitioners are having to stay late at the office or bring charts home disrupting their work-life balance.
It’s no wonder nurse practitioners are struggling with burnout!
